New Orleans Deploys Roam Secure for Emergency Text Notification
NOLA Ready Will Send Routine and Critical Life-Saving Messages to First Responders, Government Officials, Residents and Businesses
ARLINGTON, Va., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- More than a year and a half after Hurricane Katrina hit Gulf Coast communities, emergency officials in New Orleans took the lessons they learned from Katrina and Rita and launched a city-wide interoperable emergency text communication system called NOLA Ready. The City of New Orleans is using the Roam Secure Alert Network (RSAN(TM)) to power NOLA Ready and deliver messages to first responders, local government officials businesses and the residents of New Orleans. New Orleans represents the latest client to use RSAN and to become a part of the Roam Secure Information Exchange Network (RSIX). With RSIX emergency information can be shared with the parishes that surround New Orleans, across the state of Louisiana and with other leading cities, counties and states across the country that are part of the RSIX national platform.
During major disasters or routine emergency situations, residents can sign up on NOLA Ready ( http://www.nolaready.info/ ) to receive important information about evacuation, threatening levee breaches, power outages, and communication disruptions. The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security will use NOLA Ready to deliver real-time situation reports and life-saving alerts to first responders and emergency managers, and the public via their email, cell phones, pagers, BlackBerrys and Treos.
"We piloted the RSAN system in the spring of 2006, during a regional hurricane preparedness exercise with success. RSAN adds another critical piece to the city's communication infrastructure," said Lt Col. Jerry Sneed, USMC, (ret) Director of the City of New Orleans Office of Emergency Preparedness. "Text communication was a reliable means to communicate in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita when much of the region's infrastructure was severely damaged. RSAN is an essential tool to reach our folks in the field and keep them armed with up-to-the-minute information, as well as to deliver vital public safety information to our citizens and businesses."
Several Roam Secure customers, including Urban Search and Rescue teams, emergency services and government leaders from several counties in Northern Virginia as well as California, were deployed to the New Orleans area following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. These groups used their RSAN systems to communicate with field personnel while other forms of communication remained ineffective. "Text messaging and Roam Secure have both been proven reliable for communication during the major disasters and all hazards situations from 9/11 to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are proud to support New Orleans's in their efforts to improve preparedness and communication capabilities," said Roam Secure CEO, David Drescher.
RSAN systems delivered more than 22 million emergency alerts in 2006 and provide a reliable and efficient means to alert key personnel, residents and businesses during a variety of natural or man-made disasters from hurricanes, to earthquakes to terrorist attacks and routine incidents about severe weather, traffic crime and more. More than 125 fully interoperable RSAN systems are deployed and used regularly throughout the United States by major cities, counties, federal agencies, medical centers and key businesses. The 17 jurisdictions in and around the Washington DC metropolitan area use RSAN on a daily basis to communicate with first responders, key government officials, businesses, and residents. RSAN systems also facilitate communication in the Greater Philadelphia Region and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Residents of New Orleans are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts by visiting http://www.nolaready.info/ . They can also register for the system by sending an SMS text message to NOLA4U (665248).
